What can I say, I prefer water to oil. This stone is large enough for nice long strokes, sturdy enough to not be fragile and the price is right. This is a nice stone and all that I need for my pocket and hunting knives. I have already used it to sharpen my EDC pocket knife and my 14" bush knife. Worked great! The 1000 grit side gives a really sharp edge. I can't see the need for anything finer. Heck, I even used it yesterday to sharpen the blade in my box cutter because I am out of blades. Shipping was quick, I'm happy.

This thing is not coarse enought on the course side. I spent like an hour and still failed at getting a V on the edge of a knife that was dull. And the Fine side is too fine for a sharp edge, it's only good for polishing or touching up a already sharp edge.

They don't really have 600 grit stones here but, i'd Recommend just getting a Diamond immpregnated rod with 600 grit for re-sharpening a edge that is dull. The diamonds allow it to cut very easy. 600 is a medium grit. Get a 12" rod or something long cause the small ones can be a little uncomfortable. It's also easier to aim the angle of your grind on a rod than on a flat stone. Just hold it vertical.

As for getting a V on a dull edge, I have no idea, my dad recommends I get a V on the edge by using $1 sandpaper with 80 grit or 120 grit and a maching that runs the paper.

Oh, and the stone is flat so it's VERY difficult to sharpen any knives what so ever on it. Rods are way easier.

Despite of the description telling this water stone is for Japanese knives I have tried this it on 440C and 440V steels and found that it's near impossible to achieve good sharpness on them. So those, who uses stainless steel primary is better to find stainless steel specific stones.

Double sided water stone. Coarse 250 grit for removing knicks and fine 1000 grit for finishing. Proper maintenance of a knife is very important. A sharp, well honed edge is essential for a clean cut. There are a number of ways to sharpen a knife, but water stones are the preferred method, because the user has absolute control during the sharpening process. Japanese whetstones in particular are said to produce a finer edge than North American stones due to the unique bonding process of the stone during the manufacturing process.
